An oral history fourteen years in the making

The 13th Floor
Elevators Story

Some stories can only be told by the people who lived them. This is one of them.

The film

History through the voices that made it.

Most documentaries tell history by looking back.

The 13th Floor Elevators Story tells history through the voices of the people who made it.

Produced over fourteen years, this oral history brings together the surviving members of the 13th Floor Elevators, their families, friends, and eyewitnesses to preserve one of the most influential stories in American rock music.

There are no actors. No dramatic reenactments. No narration telling viewers what to think.

Only the people who lived the story.

As the years passed, some of those voices were lost. Several participants died during production, while other rare interviews, personal film footage, and photographs were entrusted to this project so their memories could be preserved. Together they form a historical record that could never be assembled again.

Slip Inside This House

A guiding principle

The people who made the music should share in its success.

I want everyone to know that one of the guiding principles behind this project has always been to make sure the people who made this music—and, where appropriate, their families—share in its success. Without the band's participation and the interviews they gave, these films simply would not exist.

This isn't about charity. It's about doing what I believe is right. Too often, the people who created the music have not received the recognition or compensation they deserved. My goal has always been to help change that and to honor their contributions in a meaningful way.
